There are Fajks in the census who were born in Bohemia. There are a few on the passenger lists born in Hungary. There is a place in the Netherlands called Fajk.

I checked both the Ancestry sites in the UK and also Germany and no Fajk appears in their records. The letters "jk" together are not German. So keep on hunting.

yes, no, maybe. Huh? The reason for saying this is that you need the town/ village. The name of the COUNTRY will vary, based on the time of the event, and which "govt" was in power at the time. Example.. a family living in NY in the census used the birth place of "Bohemia". That location today might be known as part of the Czech republic; 50 yrs ago, it could have fallen into boundaries of Czechoslovakia. My grandfather gives his place of birth as "Germany".. which it was, at the time of his birth. It is in Poland today (Poland was annexed by Germany in the 1800s). Eastern Europe is very tricky on this, due to the constant changes of govt, of boundaries, of names. A town, on the other hand, stays the same. Thinking the same idea in the US.. at one time, New Orleans was under French rule. Later, sold to the US. If a state begins with (say) 10 counties, those same lands can be split into 40 "new" counties. It can be almost impossible to say a name is "German" or other nationalities, because that idea is flexible. An exact location of origin for a person stays the same, regardless of the country it falls into.

Hi Anna Susan: Austria-Hungary obviously contained at least two modern-day countries. However, there were several more... As has been indicated, "Germany" is historically & geographically a proverbial can of worms.
