Interesting, my Hungarian husband and I are also retiring in Hungary soon. Things have changed allot in the past 30 years, some for the better and some not. We bought an apt. in the 7th district about 4 years ago. We usually spend only 6 months living in Hungary during the spring and summer months and with cost of gasoline, utilities, food and sometimes going out, we spend an average of $800 to $1,00 per month without paying any rent. When we finally retire there full time, we will have to lower our costs a bit to stay within our budget. I would think for a single person that takes public transportation and cooks at home, you can easily do it for $500. per month and not feel deprived. A few words of caution though, although we love Hungary and it's people, it's not like it was when you lived there before. There is wild capitalism and the people have gotten a bit wild and out of control too. Don't trust anyone 100%, they are looking for angles to get ahead themselves at your expence. Many of the neighborhoods are run by small time district mafia's. We found this out after we purchased our apt. People are desperate for money there and will do many strange and unheard of in the US things to make a buck or two. The government system still has many laws and rules on the books from the old socialist system that have been twisted into a capitalist way.Still allot of red tape to get some things done, have to go with the flow or you will get frustrated and remember quickly why you left 30 years ago. Still it is a beautiful place and not everyone is out for the kill but please beware, don't get too close to anyone too soon. You may wish to hire a lawyer about your property to make sure it has been filed properly in your name at the land management office. There are still many real estate scams going on. Yes, it is much cheaper to have a nice life in Hungary then in the US but it comes with other issues. Don't forget, watch your back don't let anyone get overly friendly with you too soon. www.budapestinfo.hu

Regarding prices, you can compare Budapest with some American cities on this page: http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/comparison/budapest/san-francisco As you can expect, Budapest is way cheaper. I'm not sure how much this helps.
