Unless you have two incomes or a very high paid skill, it will be very hard to get by in Hungary. The average take home pay is around $600.USD per month. Most households have at least two incomes or people live with roommates or other family members. My Hungarian husband and I own a flat there and will retire in Budapest in a year or so but has far has working there, even he with his language skills would never consider doing that.It is just too hard to live there. If you are hired by an international company because of any special skills you may have, you may get by. The inflation is very high there and taxes are around 20% or higher. The current government has run wild and ruined everything. You may be able to find a small flat for around 60 to 70,ooo forint per month but that will take a big chunk out of your pay. There is also very high unemployment there and they would perfer to hire nationals with language skills. It is a very hard place to get ahead in.Food costs are reasonable if you cook at home or eat at small lunch menu places set up for office workers. I love Hungary but you must be a survivor on every level to make it.
