How would you translate this: I don't speak Hungarian. Do you speak English(French)(Romanian)? Planning on visiting Hungary near Debrecen for a day or so here pretty soon. I don't know Hungarian and would like to order at a restaurant or go into a shop or something. Would I have any luck with the languages I know but not Hungarian?

I'm a hungarian living in Hungary, so I have your answers: I don't speak Hungarian- Nem beszélek magyarul. ('é' is like 'ei' in the word save 'seiv', 'gy' together is spelled like 'd' in the word graduating, and 'sz' together is spelled like 's' in salt, sale, ect) Do you speak English - Beszél angolul? (watch out for 'é' and 'sz') Anyway, English is the far most spoken foreign language in this country, so if you have that properly, there's not much need here to force our difficult-to-talk language. Don't worry for shopping or ordering food, English is almost everywhere a necessity before entering a job as a salesman or waiter/waitress, so just start talking english, they'll understand (as almost all the people younger then 25-30 years). Oh and don't stress, we love tourists here... and the money they bring :D Have a great holiday! Oh and quite some hungarian don't like romanian, nor their language. If you wouldn't like to see some 'suspicious' eyes, keep it low. Just a tip.

"Nem beszélek magyarúl." "Beszél Angolúl?" (formal version) "Beszélsz Angolúl?" (informal version) To order water at a restaurant you would say: "Vizet kérek szépen." Hungarian is a tough language, the pronounciation is pretty tough for most non-Hungarians as well. I don't know how far you will get using English, but it would still be your best bet. Good luck

I've been twice in Hungary, and I don't know their language, but it was OK, most of 'em speak english, especially the western side of the country (west of Budapest). And if you're romanian, don't be afraid. The hungarians who don't like romanians are not those from Hungary, but those who live in Romania. Have a pleasant trip!
