Czardas by V. Monti?
Why did this Italian compose a beautiful Hungarian melody? Did he live in Hungary?

A czardas is a Hungarian dance form characterized by various tempo changes. A number of composers including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, J. Strauss and others have used that style and form of music for their own compositions. The czardas form just fit the showy, virtuoso style composition that Monti (1868-1922) wanted to write, hence his "Czardas" (1904). He never lived in Hungary. Musician, composer, teacher.

Vittorio Monti was born in Naples in 1868, studied at the Conservatory of that city (S. Pietro a Maiella) and had a chance to be the conductor of Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris where he wrote ballets and operettas; that tradition included hungarian themes and scenarios (quite fashionable at the end of 19th century). He never went to Hungary. His famous work is his Csárdás (ciarda in italian, czarda in english) was written in 1904. Gypsy original or fake orchestras made a hit of it. Died in 1922.
